Believe it or not, growing hemp is legal in South Carolina. In 2014, the Legislature legalized the growing of industrial hemp — cannabis sativa, the same plant as marijuana but with just traces of the psychoactive THC that gets you high. Hemp is in high demand for everything from health foods to birdseed to plastics, and South Carolina farmers want to get in on the action.
