You read that correctly. In addition to its applications in food,
cosmetics, paper and clothing, hemp fibers are also being promoted as
materials for home construction. After years of bureaucratic red tape,
structural engineer Bob Clayton got approval to build his Tarpon Springs
home with so-called "hempcrete" in 2013. It's only the fourth in the
U.S., and the first of its kind in Florida.
"I imported $6,500
worth of hemp from England to build my house," he said. "It's a
1,600-square-foot house with three bedrooms. This housing is perfect for
Florida."
